The wire is the last thing to look at. Whether an old fence is worth repairing comes down to the posts and the corner assemblies: if those are sound, almost everything else is a repair, and if the posts are loose down the run while the corners have heaved and gone slack, you are rebuilding the fence whether you admit it this year or three years from now.
Most owners judge a fence from the truck window, which is exactly backwards. A saggy-looking fence on solid posts is a re-stretch and an afternoon. A tight-looking fence on rotted posts is a fence waiting for the first heavy drift or the first bull that decides to lean.
Judge it from the ground up, in this order
An old fence has three layers, and they do not fail equally or in the same way.
Posts. Grab one mid-run and push it hard, both along the line and across it. A sound post barely moves. A post that rocks in its hole has either rotted at the ground line or been worked loose by years of freeze-thaw, and no amount of new wire will fix that. Check the ground line specifically, because that is where wood posts die: below it, the wood is often still fine; at the surface, where wet and air meet, it turns punky. Scratch the post at grade with a screwdriver. If it goes in easily, the post is done.
Corners and braces. These carry the entire tension of every run that ends there, so they fail before anything else does. Look for corner posts leaning toward the pull, brace wires hanging slack, and horizontal brace rails that have popped free of their notches or pins. Then check whether the corner post has risen: a heaved corner often shows a collar of disturbed soil or a post that suddenly stands taller than its neighbors.
Wire, rails, or boards. This is the cheapest layer to fix and the most visible, which is why it gets blamed for problems it did not cause. Broken wires, a stretched-out section, a cracked rail, a board pulled off by snow load — all straightforward, all repairable, none of them a reason to replace a fence on their own.
When patching is genuinely the right call
Repair is honest work, not a compromise, when the structure underneath is still doing its job:
- Corners and gate assemblies are plumb, tight, and firmly set
- Posts are solid at the ground line down most of the run
- Damage is localized — a tree came down, a vehicle went through, elk hit one stretch
- Wire has stretched but is not rusted through or brittle
- Rails or boards have failed individually while the post line stays straight
That last one matters on ranch board fence especially. Boards are consumables. Replacing them on a straight, sound post line is basic maintenance and should be treated that way.
The other genuine repair case is a fence that was built well but built for the wrong animal. A sound wire fence that no longer holds the horses you bought since is not a failed fence — it is a fence that needs a different infill, and adding no-climb mesh to good posts is far cheaper than starting over.
When patching is throwing money away
The tell is not any single failure. It is failures showing up in more than one place at once.
If the posts are going down the whole line, you are on the wrong side of the math. Setting replacement posts one at a time into an existing fence costs more per post than building a new line, because every one is a custom operation — pull the staples, work the old post out, set the new one, re-attach, re-tension. Do that fifteen times and you have spent new-fence money on a fence that is still twenty years old everywhere you did not touch.
The same is true of corners. When corners have heaved and the braces have gone slack, the fence cannot be re-tensioned, and a fence that cannot be tensioned cannot be repaired in any meaningful sense. You can nurse it. You cannot fix it.

That last row gets overlooked. Plenty of old fence sits where it made sense to somebody in 1970 — crossing a drainage, cutting a pasture in a shape nobody grazes anymore, running straight up a slope that now washes. If you are spending real money on a line, spend it on a line you actually want, including where gates, cattle guards, and equipment crossings belong.
What to look at on your own property after a hard winter
Spring is the honest season for fence inspection, because winter does the testing for you. Walk the line on foot, not from a side-by-side, and look for these:
- Posts standing proud. Frost heave lifts posts a little each year. A post noticeably taller than its neighbors has been jacked up, and its grip in the ground is compromised even if it still feels tight in April.
- Slack that appeared over winter. Wire tightens in cold and slackens in heat, so some seasonal change is normal. Slack that does not come back when the line warms usually means something moved at a corner.
- Drift damage. Look where snow loads and slides — the lee side of shelterbelts, below roof lines, the downhill side of benches. Rails crack and wires get pushed out of line there first.
- Ice and water at the base. Posts that stand in spring runoff or a seep rot faster than anything else on the property. If the same twenty posts fail every time, the ground is telling you something the fence type should answer, which is often the argument for surface-built jackleg through that stretch instead of set posts.
- Wildlife pressure points. Bent-down top wires and broken staples on a game trail. Elk cross where they cross, and rebuilding the same fence in the same spot buys the same result.
- Gates. Dragging gates, sagging hinges, and latches that no longer meet are usually a leaning gate post, which is a corner problem in disguise.
Take pictures and mark problems with flagging tape as you go. When you get an estimate, that walk is half the conversation already done.
Phasing a replacement when the budget is not all there
Replacing a whole perimeter at once is often not realistic, and it does not have to be. Phasing works when you sequence it by function rather than by convenience.
Do corners, gates, and braces first. They are what everything else hangs on. New assemblies let you properly tension the old wire between them, which buys years out of the existing runs while you save for the rest.
Then take the runs that carry the most pressure. Whatever holds livestock against a road, a neighbor, or a highway gets replaced before the back line that fences hay ground against timber. Failure consequences, not appearance, set the order.
Group by stretch, not by post. Rebuilding a continuous section from corner to corner is efficient. Scattering new posts through an old line is not.
Match materials across phases. Decide the fence type, post material, and rail dimensions once, at the start, so phase three still matches phase one. Milling rail stock from a consistent spec — often from timber off the property itself through custom sawmilling — keeps a multi-year rebuild looking like one fence.
Use the seasons. Ground that digs well in summer may be frozen in January, but surface-built styles and shop work like gate fabrication and repairs do not care what the ground is doing. A phased plan can put dirt work in the open season and metal work in the cold one.
Can you splice new wire into an old fence?
Yes, and it is standard repair work. The limit is the condition of the old wire — if it is brittle enough to snap when you tension it, every splice creates the next break, and you are chasing the fence instead of fixing it.
Is it worth replacing just the bad posts?
Up to a point. Scattered replacements make sense when they are genuinely scattered. Once you are replacing them in groups, the cost per post climbs and the value drops, and rebuilding that stretch corner-to-corner is the better spend.
Does the old fence have to come out first?
Usually, and it is real work worth accounting for — pulling staples, rolling old wire, and hauling out old posts takes time and disposal. The exception is when the new line moves, in which case the new fence can go in first and the old one comes out afterward without leaving stock loose.
Can any of this happen in winter?
Some of it. Frozen ground stops setting posts, but layout, material prep, fabrication, and surface-built fence styles keep moving, which is why a phased plan often runs year-round even though digging does not.
