Larger Custom Archways, Outside Montana
We’re a Bozeman-based crew, and most of what we build is in Southwest Montana. Ranch entrances are the exception. For archways, brand signs and automatic gates, we travel anywhere in Montana. For larger custom archways, such as arches with detailed features or custom stone masonry, we also travel to Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota.
If you own a ranch in Wyoming, a property in Idaho or land in the Dakotas and want the kind of entrance arch we build here, this page explains how that kind of project works.
What Counts as a Larger Custom Archway
The out-of-state work is for arches where design and craftsmanship carry the project. That usually means one or both of these:
- Detailed features: stacked-log or steel-banded columns, heavy square milled headers, cut steel brands, silhouettes or lettering, or a CNC-cut ranch brand sign built into the header
- Custom stone masonry: stone columns or bases under a timber, log or steel arch, built by our own masonry crew
A larger arch can also be designed with an automatic gate, side fencing or a cattle guard so the whole entrance works as one system. If you aren’t sure whether your project fits, call and describe it.
How an Out-of-State Archway Project Works
The steps are the same ones we follow in Montana. The difference is that more of the early conversation happens by phone and photo before anyone is on site.
- Talk it through. Call (406) 551-6772 or start a project online. Tell us where the property is, the look you’re after and what has to fit under the arch. Photos help a lot: the entrance, the approach from the road, the land around it, and any arches you’ve seen and liked.
- Site visit. Before we design, we look at the site in person: the approach, sightlines, grade and the clearance your equipment needs.
- Design. We work through structure (log or square milled beam, timber or steel), finish (rustic or stained), base (timber posts or stone columns) and signage. It’s the same arch design process we use for Montana properties.
- Milling and fabrication at home. Logs and beams are milled at our own sawmill, and steel work such as brands, banding and gate hardware is fabricated and welded in-house by our welding crew.
- The crew travels to install. Our crew brings the work to your property, pours footings below frost depth, lays any stone and stands the arch.
Scheduling and travel are part of the estimate conversation, and every project is quoted on its own.
Built for Wind, Snow and Frost
Wind across the Wyoming plains, deep snow in Idaho’s mountain valleys and hard Dakota winters put the same loads on an arch that Montana weather does. We design for them the same way:
- Footings below frost depth. Frost depth varies from place to place, and every column we stand starts below the local frost line. A tall arch shows every degree of lean, so this is the number that governs everything else. Here’s why it matters.
- Clearance. The header height is set by the tallest thing that will ever pass under: stock trailers, hay trucks, RVs, plows. It’s fixed the day the arch is set, so we size it for future equipment too.
- Wind. On open ground, posts, connections and any hanging sign are sized for wind load.
- Snow and ice. Joinery and details are built to shed water and snow instead of trapping it, which is what keeps timber sound through long winters.
Materials
An out-of-state arch draws on the same materials as one we’d build near Bozeman:
- Cedar and rough sawn beams milled in-house
- Lodgepole logs for the classic log archway look
- Structural steel and pipe, welded in our own shop (see steel and pipe ranch entrances)
- Natural stone for columns and bases
The classic combination, timber overhead on stone columns, is a good example of a larger custom arch. For more on how those materials work together, see designing a ranch entrance with stone, masonry and timber and planning a custom ranch entrance.
Closer to Home: Anywhere in Montana
If your property is in Montana, distance isn’t a question for entrance work. We build custom archways, brand signs and automatic gates anywhere in the state, and our complete ranch entrance page shows how those pieces come together.
Start Your Archway Project
Tell us where the property is and send a few photos of the entrance, and we’ll take it from there. Start your archway project or call (406) 551-6772 to talk it through.
