Ranch Entrances and Gates in Livingston

An entrance in Livingston has to work in the wind first and look good second. Gate leaves, archway headers and hanging signs all catch it, so we size and detail each piece for the gusts that come down the Yellowstone rather than for a calm day.

We have built entrances here before, including an automatic entry gate system under a heavy timber archway, set on footings meant for deep frost and the weight of the gate leaves. The same thinking goes into new work in town, on the river benches and on ranches north toward the Shields.

Most of our gate work is new construction, but plenty of Park County places come with an entrance someone else built. We will look at an older arch or a gate that quits every winter, tell you what is sound, and repair or rebuild it depending on what we find.

What Changes for Ranch Entrances & Gates in Livingston

Gate leaves act like sails

A long swing leaf standing open in a gust puts its whole load on the hinge post and the operator. Here we often split a wide opening into two shorter leaves, add a hold-open stop, size the operator for wind as well as weight, or use a slide gate where the ground allows it.

Signs that let the wind through

A solid panel hung from a crossbeam pulls on the whole arch every time the wind blows. A CNC-cut steel sign with open lettering and brand work lets air pass, and it gets mounted to the header so it cannot swing, chatter or wear through its hangers.

Drifts land in the same place every year

Wind piles snow on the lee side of fences, berms and the arch posts themselves. Before placing a gate we ask where the drift sat last February, because a swing arc in the drift line turns an automatic gate into a manual one until spring.

River bottom or bench ground

Low ground near the Yellowstone can be wet with a high water table, while the benches above bring rock close to the surface. Archway posts and gate columns carry real load in this wind, so the footing approach changes with the ground under each entrance.

Livingston Ranch Entrances & Gates Questions

Should I choose a swing gate or a slide gate in Livingston wind?

It depends on the ground and the space beside the drive. A slide gate shows less area to the wind and is not blocked by snow piled in front of it, but it needs a fairly level run alongside the opening. Where a swing gate fits the site better, we split the opening into two leaves and build the posts and operator for the wind it will see.

Will a ranch sign on an archway hold up to the wind here?

Yes, when it is designed for it. We favor cut steel signs that let air pass through, mounted so they cannot swing against the header. The arch posts and footings are then sized to carry that extra load.

Someone else installed our automatic gate and it keeps failing. Can you help?

Yes. Most of our gate work is new construction, but we do take on repairs. Around Livingston the cause often turns out to be an operator too small for the leaf in wind or a post moving with frost, and we will tell you whether a repair or a rebuild is the honest fix.

Do you build entrances outside Livingston?

Yes. Archways, ranch brand signs and automatic gates are work we travel anywhere in Montana for, and larger custom archways also go to the neighboring states. Closer in, we work in both directions from Livingston, up Paradise Valley and north into the Shields Valley.
